Rooted in Traditions and long-standing efforts – the Burlington Community is known for many things.

  • We have been the Burlington Community Club since 1953. Our mission is to promote a sense of community by maintaining our community centre where, through activities, we can promote the physical, social and emotional well-being of the people in our community as well as connect with folks from neighbouring communities.
  • Agriculture, forestry and the fishery provide a way of life for many of our residents. We are a growing community welcoming folks of all ages and vocations.
  • From the Brow to the Bay, our book, chronicles both community and family history. Books are still available by contacting Brian Hirtle at 902-698-0060 or brianleehirtle@gmail.com or visit Larry’s Drug Store in Berwick. The book makes a great gift for those away from home!
  • Our historic Cemetery is a piece of community pride. Located on Barley Street, we were the first community to have a green burial ground in Nova Scotia https://burlingtoncemetery.ca/
  • Our North Mountain Communities received the 2018 Lieutenant Governor’s Community Spirit Award
  • Long standing community celebration of Canada Day includes a Horse Pull, parade, live entertainment, food, silent auction, and a Children’s Carnival. July 1 2022 will be the 34nd Annual! Come Celebrate with us!

North Mountain United Tapestry Cultural & Heritage Society

North Mountain United Tapestry Cultural & Heritage Society is a multi-faceted community project.

In 2013 community concerns regarding the future of a historic church building  (1860) in Harbourville, Nova Scotia, inspired a small group of volunteers to create and present a proposal to the United Church of Canada.

The proposal was simple. The group would form a heritage and cultural society which would maintain the church building and offer it to the community as a welcoming meeting place. In return the United Church of Canada would allow the building to be identified as the home of the North Mountain United Tapestry.

The proposal was accepted and “United Tapestry” was born.

The society celebrates and promotes local culture, commerce and environmental stewardship within the surrounding North Mountain communities.

Community Voices

It has been over 10 years since the publication of our community history From the Brow to the Bay and
more than 20 since Pat Kemp and Anna Osburn began interviewing residents for their memories and
anecdotes about growing up and living in the Burlington, Viewmount and Woodlawn areas. Most of
these interviews were recorded on cassette tapes and later, a few were made on a digital recorder. Pat
and Anna were not particularly concerned regarding the sound quality of these recordings; they were
interested in getting stories and quoting people accurately. It was not until recently that their value to
the community was realized. These are the voices of beloved community members who have since
passed on. Though sometimes reticent and humbly unsure of what they had to offer, these recordings
represent the people of our community as it once was – close-knit, hard-working and independent.
Anna was grateful to obtain a grant from the Helen Creighton Society which funded the digitization and
audio quality improvement of these interviews. It is hoped they will be listened to with interest and
appreciation of bygone days. For those who hear their loved one’s voice again, it will no doubt be a very
personal experience. As we go about our busy lives, it serves us well to remember those who lived,
loved and served in this community and perhaps get a sense of what it once was.

It is our intention to add 1 or 2 recordings a month until all dozen or so have been uploaded to this
website.
